Over the years, Ahren Stephens and I have been on both sides of trading rooms. We’ve seen it all.
We discovered that most trading rooms held you captive all day and were led by the most charismatic person behind the microphone. Whether they knew anything or not was irrelevant. Most of the time in those long, drawn-out sessions, perhaps 98% of the time, it was downright boredom with no activities, training or the dissemination of important information. The other 2% was sheer terror, as we uncontrollably watched our positions vanish. That was no way to trade. That is also likely the reason most trading rooms fail.
We decided to change all that. Now, instead of checking a myriad of stocks, options, sectors, industries and what not, we only trade one stock: SPY (SPDR S&P 500 Exchange Traded Fund).
When we started the DayTradeSPY Trading Room, we vowed the following:
To the best of our knowledge — and we know of many trading rooms — no one comes close to how we manage ours. We are just as true to our mission as we were 15 years ago with our first such webinar.
Every morning, the room opens at 9 a.m., ET. The music you hear is not just to entertain you while waiting, but rather to ensure your audio is alive and well. If you do not hear easy background sounds, check your hardware and software. It is best to take care of technical issues before we start the broadcast, not spend 20 minutes into the show fixing them.
At 9:20, we kick off displaying the opening charts. We check the futures, then flip over to see what market-making news is on deck for the day and determine how it will affect our trading. We follow up with a look at the technicals, establish support and resistance numbers for the “Out of the Morning Gate” strategy and scan for chart patterns. We may even map out the Yellow Brick Road to identify where SPY may go during the day.
Our objective is to get into trades, both real and simulated, and earn modest gains. We may place one or multiple trades, depending on the news and how we feel about trading that day. Usually, we walk away with handsome profits.
Somewhere around 10:10, we defer to Ahren for his take on longer-out trades and view his charts and indicators. We also answer questions along the way, congratulating winners and soothing losers. Usually around 10:30 or so, we wrap it up, letting you go on with the rest of your busy day.
